February 2011: 2011 CALIFORNIA BIOMEDICAL INDUSTRY REPORT, issued by California Healthcare Institute, BayBio and PricewaterhouseCoopers, is now available. The reported total employment in California during 2009 was 267,772 - a 2% year over year loss of jobs - suggesting the sector is weathering the economic times surprisingly well.
April 20: Nature's April 20, 2011, issue includes articles and editorials about "The Future of the PHD," that call into question the workforce need for PhD level scientists and engineers both here and abroad.
April 24: National Medical Laboratory Professional Week is April 24-30 tis year! The American Society for Clinical Pathology is one organization celebrating the "medical laboratory professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in every aspect of health care."
April 27: San Diego State University won a marketing award in recognition of the press it received for the BRIDGES program, the federally supported biotechnology training program designed in partnership with BIOCOM, San Diego Workforce Partnership and San Diego Miramar College.
May 4: Dart NeuroScience LLC is looking to hire someone with the right combination of biological research and information technology experience - even at the bachelor's degree level! This is a position with a lot of room for growth at the bioinformatics 'edge.'
May 20: Nature Biotechnology surveyed popular job search engines to answer the question, Who's Hiring? Check out the list of companies - many of them are based in California. The other 'lesson learned' is that not all companies post jobs on all popular search engines.
May 24: BIOCOM Institute and its partners are offering a new certificate for Biomass Production Training. There are 24 slots; applications (were) due June 6, 2011.
June 8: Orange Coast College has federal funding to offer no- or low-cost training in health information technology. The next program start is July 2011 - applications (were) due June 24!

July 26: The Business-Higher Education Forum released a brief featuring the alignment of Professional Science Masters' (PSMs) with workforce demand. It features the CSU system's committment to PSM programs state-wide. See also the New York TImes article published July 22 about masters' degrees, including the PSM.
