The life science companies, academic centers and non-profit research institutions that make up the biotechnology, or life sciences, industry in California employed an estimated 267,772 professionals during 2009 (source: California Healthcare Institute and PriceWaterhouseCoopers).
These facts seem very dry compared to the stories from real people working in the industry! They each have fascinating stories, compelling motivations, varied educational backgrounds, and unique career paths. As you'll read, you'll find there is no one path or required pedigree for jobs in this industry. Jobs are at the bench, in the clinic and in cubicles - but typically biotechnology professionals report working with teams and colleagues all over the state, if not the world!
To provide practical information about in-demand jobs in this industry, we interviewed people across the state currently working in entry level, mid level and senior roles to share their career insights and recommendations. As we collect profiles, we'll work to define the acronyms and lingo of the industry. We will continue to add interviews with life scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs working in the life sciences industry - so check back here occasionally!
