The Certificate in Biotechnology is designed to provide individuals who have already obtained a B.A. or B.S. degree in another discipline with the opportunity to obtain a certificate for advanced Biology coursework that is equivalent to a minor in Biology with an emphasis on Biotechnology.
The Biotechnology Certificate Program (BCP) at Cal State University, East Bay is a competitive, limited enrollment program emphasizing close supervision and instruction in current theoretical and practical training in molecular life sciences. It was established in 1986 to meet the personnel requirements of the rapidly expanding Bay Area biotechnology industry.
Each course within this program is ten weeks in length, and most courses have a minimum of 60 hours of hands-on training. The current curriculum was designed after extensive consultation with representatives from academic and commercial laboratories in biotechnology. The Program is staffed by research faculty from the Departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry. The majority of the BCP faculty have active research programs in the molecular life sciences.
For more information, see the BCP website or contact a Program coordinator: Dr. Chris Baysdorfer (510-885-3459, email@example.com) or Dr. Claudia Uhde-Stone (510-885-2860, firstname.lastname@example.org).
Our program is one of eleven in the state to offer a dedicated stem cell training option. Other options include training opportunities in biomedical laboratories at the Long Beach VA hospital and local biotechnology companies. The certificate can be earned concurrent with an undergraduate degree, a graduate degree, or alone as post-baccalaureate studies.
This post-baccalaureate certificate program provides intensive theoretical and laboratory training in the techniques and application of genetic engineering and related technologies. It is meant for students who have a bachelor's degree or equivalent in the biological or biochemical sciences but who have little or no experience in genetic engineering. Students who successfully complete this program are sought after by both employers and graduate schools.
